British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of access tunnels providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," Healey added. "Including them were numerous British troops stationed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an attack killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN says Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
