The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.
Australia's selection chief George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming Ashes series.
Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.
Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches set to start on 21 November in the WACA.
He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about his chances of taking part.
"We're aware that the window is narrowing and there are permutations involved, not just his injury, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.
"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a significant role. Ideally starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll reassess."
Injury History
The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.
There is a track record of spinal problems, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss three Australian summers in a limited period.
Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.
Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the first Test.
Backup Options
If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.
Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.
Bailey described it as a "small issue and confirmed that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."
"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the opening match as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.
"He was only going to play the first two ODIs regardless. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for a short period, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
